Minot Air Force Base
Minot AFB has a special relationship with the city of Minot (pronounced MY-not), and call themselves Team Minot. After convincing the Air Force in 1954 that Minot would be an excellent place for a new base, residents and businesses in Minot raised $50,000 to buy land for the base. The AFB and city of Minot support each other as the mission of the base changes as technology advances.
Minot is the county seat for Ward County. The city started in 1887 as a settlement for railroad workers. It is called the Magic City because the tent city set up to build a dry streambed crossing moved overnight from what was thought to be the path of the railroad to what was the correct location. Minot has a diverse economic base made up of the military, agriculture, healthcare, education, tourism, service industries, and retail.
